Love Leaves Footprints

Sometimes we think we have lost someone completely.

We miss their voice. Their laughter. Their presence at family gatherings. We miss being able to pick up the phone and hear them say our name.

Grief can make it feel as though the people we love have disappeared from our lives, leaving only memories behind.

But over the years, I’ve discovered something I never expected.

Sometimes I catch myself using the same hand gestures my mother used when she spoke.

The very gestures that helped her express herself.

I’ll be in the middle of a conversation when I suddenly notice my hands moving exactly the way hers did. For a moment, it takes me by surprise. Then it makes me smile.

It’s almost as if a small piece of her is still here.

I’ve come to realize that this happens more often than we think.

Perhaps you’ve experienced it too.

Maybe you hear your father’s advice coming out of your own mouth.

Maybe you prepare a favorite family recipe exactly the way your grandmother taught you.

Maybe you comfort a friend using the same words someone once used to comfort you.

Maybe you find yourself laughing in a way that sounds remarkably familiar.

These moments remind us of something important:

The people we love leave more behind than memories.

They leave footprints.

Their influence becomes woven into the fabric of our lives.

Their values shape our decisions.

Their kindness influences how we treat others.

Their courage helps us face difficult days.

Their traditions become our traditions.

Their love continues through the lives they touched.

For years, I thought grief was mostly about learning to live with loss.

What I have learned instead is that grief also teaches us to recognize what remains.

Love remains.

Lessons remain.

Memories remain.

And sometimes, in the smallest and most unexpected moments, we discover that parts of the people we loved are still walking beside us.

Not in the way we once knew them.

But in the way they shaped us.

The way they loved us.

The way they helped make us who we are.

Perhaps that is one of life’s quiet miracles.

The people we love never truly leave us.

They leave footprints.

And every now and then, when we least expect it, we find ourselves walking in them.

Love doesn’t always stay in the ways we expect—
but it often remains in the ways we feel.

Gentle reflection:

What small or quiet moments have reminded you
that love is still with you?
