When Your Heart Begins to Feel Like Home Again

There was a time when I wondered if I would ever feel like myself again.

Grief had changed everything.

Not just my circumstances.

Me.

I remember looking in the mirror and feeling as though I was looking at someone I didn’t quite recognize anymore. The woman staring back carried the same face, but her heart felt different. Even the things that once brought me joy seemed distant.

It was as though grief had quietly introduced me to a stranger.

For a long time, I believed healing meant finding my way back to the person I had been before loss.

I kept searching for her.

Eventually, I realized something that changed everything.

Healing wasn’t asking me to go back.

It was inviting me to grow forward.

That doesn’t mean I stopped missing the people I love.

It doesn’t mean the tears disappeared.

Even today, there are moments when a memory catches me by surprise.

But the memories no longer only bring sadness.

Many of them now bring gratitude.

Some even bring a smile.

That didn’t happen overnight.

It happened one ordinary day at a time.

Somewhere along the journey, I noticed I was beginning to breathe a little easier.

I found myself laughing without feeling guilty.

Making plans again.

Looking forward to tomorrow instead of simply trying to survive today.

Those changes didn’t mean I loved my family any less.

They meant love was beginning to heal me.

Today, I don’t believe healing is returning to who we were before loss.

I don’t think that’s possible.

Loss changes us.

But love changes us too.

I believe healing is slowly feeling at home inside yourself again.

It’s waking up one morning and realizing that peace has quietly taken a seat beside your grief.

It’s discovering that your heart has become strong enough to carry both tears and hope.

Both memories and new beginnings.

Both loss...

and love.

Looking back now, I can see something I couldn’t see then.

I wasn’t losing myself.

I was becoming someone new.

Someone whose heart had been broken...

but had also been gently rebuilt.

Perhaps that’s what healing really is.

Not returning to who we once were.

But learning to feel at home inside the person love has shaped us to become.

💛
