How Music Helps Us Heal

There are moments in grief when words don’t reach far enough.

We try to explain what we’re feeling.

We search for something that makes sense of the ache.

But sometimes… there are no words that can hold it.

And that’s where music quietly steps in.

Not to fix anything.

Not to rush the healing.

But to sit with us… right where we are.

There were times when a song would come on, and I didn’t expect what it would open.

A single note…

a familiar melody…

a voice carrying something I couldn’t say myself…

And suddenly, everything I had been holding inside would rise to the surface.

Not all at once.

Not in a way that overwhelmed me.

But gently.

Like something inside me had been waiting for permission.

Music has a way of reaching the places we keep protected.

It doesn’t ask us to explain.

It doesn’t ask us to be strong.

It simply meets us.

In the quiet.

In the memory.

In the space where love and loss still live side by side.

There is something powerful about hearing a song that understands.

A lyric that feels like it was written just for you.

A melody that carries both sorrow and peace in the same breath.

In those moments, we realize something important:

We are not alone in what we feel.

Sometimes music gives us a place to release.

The tears come more easily.

The weight softens, even if just a little.

And sometimes… it gives us something else.

A sense of connection.

A reminder that love is still here.

A quiet knowing that what we carry has not disappeared.

I’ve come to believe that music doesn’t take the pain away.

But it changes how we hold it.

It creates space around it.

It brings in light where things have felt heavy.

It reminds us that even in grief… there can still be something beautiful.

There are songs I return to again and again.

Not because they make everything better…

but because they help me feel what needs to be felt.

And in that feeling, something begins to shift.

Not all at once.

Not in a way anyone else can see.

But slowly… gently…

in the way healing often comes.

If you’ve ever found yourself stopping in the middle of a song…

closing your eyes…

taking a deeper breath…

feeling something you didn’t expect…

then you already understand.

Music has a way of holding us

until we’re ready to hold ourselves again.

Sometimes healing doesn’t come through words…

it comes through what we’re able to feel.

I’ve recently shared a new song, Someday, Somewhere,

written from that same place.
